Study identifies three organizations successfully using innovative financing for global health

Researchers from Imperial College London, the Harvard Global Equity Initiative, and Harvard School of Public Health "have identified three global organizations that new funding initiatives should emulate in order to meet health priorities in poorer countries, in research published [Thursday] in the journal the Lancet," Imperial College London reports in an article on its webpage.

Contradictions among member state, donor priorities must be resolved for current WHO reform to be successful

In a BMJ analysis examining the future of the WHO, David Legge, scholar emeritus at Australia's La Trobe University, notes "[a] substantial shortfall in the funds available for basic administrative functions led WHO's director general, Margaret Chan, to initiate another reform of the WHO in 2010," and "outlines the problems and what the reforms are trying to achieve."

Presidential support for global health critical in next administration

"It's not much of a surprise that Monday night's presidential debate, which focused on foreign policy, was consumed by a discussion of defense spending, and security and trade policies," but "it's still disappointing that both President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Gov. Focus on GHI principles necessary to ensure success of U.S. global health programs

Noting that the Global Health Initiative (GHI) leadership and the three core entities of GHI -- USAID, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and PEPFAR -- announced the closure of the GHI office and an end to the initiative's current phase on July 3, Serra Sippel, president of the Center for Health and Gender Equity, writes in the Huffington Post's "Politics" blog that "the three agencies will be responsible for ensuring that the GHI principles are implemented in the field to achieve global health goals."

Short-term secondhand smoke exposure can lead to airway restriction

Heavy concentrations of secondhand smoke, such as those found in smoke-filled bars and cars, can lead to airway restriction for bystanders within minutes of exposure. The study, presented at CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, showed that after 20 minutes of exposure to highly concentrated secondhand smoke, participants experienced near immediate physiologic changes, including airway resistance and impedance.
