The shells of a common plant virus, inhaled into a lung tumor or injected into ovarian, colon or breast tumors, not only triggered the immune system in mice to wipe out the tumors, but provided systemic protection against metastases, researchers from Case Western Reserve University and Dartmouth University report.

Study: Low-dose CT screening can reduce lung cancer mortality by 20% in high-risk population

A national study involving 53,000 patients and 11 institutions (including Wake Forest Baptist) compared CT screens with chest X-rays and found that the scanning reduced lung cancer mortality by 20 percent in this high-risk population.

Large doses of vitamin A reduce severity of gastrointestinal disease in mice

After observing that some gastrointestinal disease in premature human and mouse infants progresses only when certain immune system white blood cells go into inflammatory overdrive, Johns Hopkins researchers have found that giving large doses of vitamin A to mice converts those blood cells into inflammation suppressors and reduces the severity of the disease, compared to untreated mice.

Adaptimmune Therapeutics plc, a leader in the use of TCR engineered T-cell therapy to treat cancer, today announced that it has initiated a Phase I/II study of its affinity enhanced T-cell therapy targeting the MAGE-A10 cancer antigen in patients with locally advanced or metastatic (Stage IIIb or IV) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most prevalent type of lung cancer representing approximately 85 percent of lung cancers.
