First targeted treatment to improve survival of high-risk patients with acute myeloid leukemia

Midostaurin added to standard chemotherapy is the first targeted treatment to improve survival of a high-risk, genetically defined subgroup of patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), reported Dr. Richard Stone, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, on behalf of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology group, in a plenary session at the 57th American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting and Exposition in Orlando.

Takeda presents Phase 3 TOURMALINE-MM1 data for multiple myeloma at ASH 2015

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited today announced results from the TOURMALINE-MM1 trial presented at the 57th Annual Meeting and Exposition of the American Society of Hematology (ASH), showing that treatment with NINLARO (ixazomib) capsules is effective in extending progression free survival (PFS) with a manageable tolerability profile in patients with relapsed and/or refractory multiple myeloma.

Risk of developing visceral leishmaniasis much higher in transplant patients

Researchers from Spain have analysed the prevalence of leishmaniasis among the population of organ transplant recipients. The findings of this study, published in the journal 'PLoS Neglected Tropical Disease', confirm that the risk of developing visceral leishmaniasis ‑the most severe form of the disease which can pose life-threatening complications‑ is more than one hundred times greater in transplant patients living in areas of disease outbreak.

New research finds disparity in post-transplant survival between Native Americans and whites

Native Americans have decreased access to kidney transplants and are more likely to die on the waiting list than whites according to new research presented at ASN Kidney Week 2015 held November 3-8 in San Diego, CA. Researchers also found that while short-term outcomes after receiving a kidney transplant were similar, Native Americans had worse long-term survival outcomes compared to whites.
