Thermo Fisher Scientific selected as NCS biological and environmental sample repository partner

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced it has been selected as the National Children’s Study (NCS) biological and environmental sample repository partner. The study examines the effects of environmental influences on the health and development of 100,000 children across the United States, following them from before birth until age 21.

Individuals with lower educational status are associated with worse asthma symptoms

Individuals with more education suffer less from asthma. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal Respiratory Research have found that having less than 12 years of formal schooling is associated with worse asthma symptoms.

Increased funds lead to 'significant progress' in global malaria fight, WHO report says

WHO's World Malaria Report 2009, which was released on Tuesday, found "increased funding is starting to pay off in the battle against malaria but prevention and treatment must be increased to try to halt the killer disease," Reuters reports (Kelland, 12/15). According to the Associated Press, there were more than 240 million cases of malaria and an estimated 863,000 people, mostly in Africa, died of the disease in 2008 (Cheng, 12/15).
