Journal of the National Cancer Institute: Projections Of The Cost Of Cancer Care In The United States: 2010-2020 - "By combining cancer prevalence with average annual costs of cancer care by phase of care and tumor site for 13 cancers in men and 16 cancers in women" and "all cancer sites combined," the authors project there will be just over 18 million cancer survivors in 2020 compared to 13.8 million survivors in 2010.

New findings are bringing scientists closer to an effective HIV vaccine. Researchers from Seattle Biomedical Research Institute, Vanderbilt University and the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT and Harvard report findings showing new evidence about broadly-reactive neutralizing antibodies, which block HIV infection. Details are published January 13 in the open-access journal PLoS Pathogens.

The program was selected as the recipient of the Mel's Magic award for January 2011. The American Brain Tumor Association (ABTA) has announced that Ryan Salinas, now a 2nd-year medical student at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is the 2010 Lucien Rubenstein Award recipient. The work of Salinas, one of 10 ABTA Medical Student Summer Fellows in 2010, was deemed "outstanding" by the organization's distinguished Scientific Advisory Council.

Collaborative Drug Discovery receives additional grant for TB drug research

Collaborative Drug Discovery, Inc. (CDD) today announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has extended its previous grant to CDD to create a novel database to spark collaborative efforts to discover more effective drugs against tuberculosis (TB). The TB bacillus infects approximately one third of the world's population and the disease kills over 1.5 million people every year.

UT Southwestern to register intent to achieve 'meaningful use' of EHRs

As the first major medical center in North Texas to implement electronic medical records in all its clinical practice groups, UT Southwestern Medical Center today applauded the government's initiative to get hospitals and health care providers across the nation to embrace new health care technology. The medical center said it will achieve the goal of "meaningful use" of electronic health records (EHR) and register for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
