Invitations open for fourth annual Young Investigator Grant for Probiotics Research

Today, the Global Probiotics Council (GPC), a committee formed by Danone and YAKULT HONSHA CO., LTD., announced the launch of the fourth annual Young Investigator Grant for Probiotics Research (YIGPRO). This grant provides two awards, each in the amount of $50,000, to rising young stars. This year's grant focus is on the role of probiotics and gastrointestinal microbiota in health and wellness. Applications will be accepted until February 15, 2011.

Researchers present definitive explanation of how fibrotic cells destroy human liver

In the latest of a series of related papers, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, with colleagues in Austria and elsewhere, present a new and more definitive explanation of how fibrotic cells form, multiply and eventually destroy the human liver, resulting in cirrhosis. In doing so, the findings upend the standing of a long-presumed marker for multiple fibrotic diseases and reveal the existence of a previously unknown kind of inflammatory white blood cell.

Gilenya offers more benefits for MS therapy than previously realized

Now, a team from The Scripps Research Institute has discovered that this drug's success may involve an unexpected biological mechanism acting within the central nervous system (CNS). This difference may mean that Gilenya offers even more benefits than previously realized and would represent the first MS therapy with direct CNS activities.

Alion awarded $1.4M Army contract to develop affordable robotic prosthetic device

Since 2003, 1,145 soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan have had a limb amputated. In response, Alion Science and Technology, an employee-owned technology solutions company, is leading a modeling and simulation research effort that could help enhance the field of prosthetic limbs. Alion was awarded an 18-month, $1.4 million contract from the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity to explore affordable and improved approaches in bringing robotic control technology to the field of prosthetic limbs.
