Endosense commences enrollment in EFFICAS I study with TactiCath force-sensing catheter

Endosense, a Swiss medical technology company focused on improving the efficacy, safety and reproducibility of catheter ablation for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, has announced it has enrolled the first patients in EFFICAS I, the first study of the EFFICAS series. These patients were enrolled in Na Homolce Hospital, Prague, Czech Republic and treated by Petr Neuzil, M.D. and Vivek Reddy, M.D.

Health Canada approves BDSI's NDS for ONSOLIS

BioDelivery Sciences International, Inc. today announced the approval of a New Drug Submission (NDS) by Health Canada, the regulatory authority in Canada, for ONSOLIS (fentanyl buccal soluble film) in the management of breakthrough pain in opioid-tolerant adult patients with cancer. ONSOLIS is the first product approved in Canada for this indication.

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, today announced the U.S. launch of its Wireless USB Adaptor for the Merlin@home™ transmitter, a system that allows important patient data from an implantable cardiac device to be wirelessly downloaded and securely transmitted via telephone for review by a physician. The new Wireless USB Adaptor enables patients using a Merlin@home transmitter to transmit data to their physician over cellular networks, allowing for more convenient care than existing landline services provide.

Total kidney removal not beneficial for elderly patients with confined kidney tumors

A new study indicates that patients aged 75 years or older who have confined kidney tumors do not live longer if they have their entire kidney removed. The research reveals that these patients typically have other medical problems of greater significance and that many should receive more conservative cancer-related care, such as observation or treatments that spare the noncancerous parts of their kidneys. The study is published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) are launching a five-year, $7.5 million natural history study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne), a degenerative genetically-linked neuromuscular disease. The study aims to validate non-invasive approaches to monitor the progression and treatment of Duchenne, and holds potential to facilitate the development of promising new therapies for people with the disease.
