Circassia Ltd, a specialty biopharmaceutical company focused on allergy, today announced that its ToleroMune(R) ragweed allergy T-cell vaccine achieved positive results in a recently completed phase II clinical trial. Ragweed allergy is particularly common in America, where it affects approximately 25% of the population. Circassia's latest clinical results follow two earlier successful phase II studies with the company's T-cell vaccine against cat allergy.

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals' Cotara specifically targets solid tumors and anti-tumor activity

Peregrine Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (PPHM) today reported publication of data in the online edition of the journal Current Cancer Therapy Reviews that supports the clinical potential of the company's novel brain cancer agent Cotara® for the treatment of patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the deadliest form of brain cancer. Cotara specifically targets cells at the center of brain tumors, so its radioactive payload is able to kill cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue largely unaffected. Cotara is currently being tested in a Phase II clinical trial in recurrent GBM patients.

The Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis is praising Social Security Commissioner Michael Astrue's announcement this morning via press release that Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), also known as Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF), and a listing of 37 other diseases and life-threatening medical conditions are the latest additions to Social Security's "Compassionate Allowances" program.

Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery performs 100th LAGB procedure

Few treatments are available to help obese adolescents who are unable to lose weight and are already suffering from obesity-related health problems. Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), an option for adults in the United States since 2001, is showing promise for teens. The Center for Adolescent Bariatric Surgery, which opened at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital in 2006, recently performed its 100th LAGB procedure.

Genzyme announces 2-year data from eliglustat tartrate Phase 2 trial for Gaucher disease

Genzyme Corporation announced today two-year follow-up data from patients enrolled in the phase 2 clinical trial for its investigational oral therapy for Gaucher disease type 1 known as eliglustat tartrate (formerly Genz-112638). Continued improvements were observed across all endpoints, including bone disease, at the two-year timepoint, compared with baseline. The two-year results were presented for the first time today at the Lysosomal Disease Network WORLD Symposium in Miami, Fla.

SSA to add early-onset Alzheimer's disease to its Compassionate Allowances Initiative

In its effort to improve and expedite the disability determination process, the Social Security Administration has announced that it will add early-onset Alzheimer's disease to its Compassionate Allowances Initiative. The initiative identifies debilitating diseases and medical conditions that meet the SSA's disability standards for Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

A clinical research study is being conducted for patients with Interstitial Cystitis/Painful Bladder Syndrome (IC/PBS), a chronic bladder disorder characterized by intense pelvic pain, urinary frequency-urgency, and pain during sexual intimacy (www.PainfulBladderStudy.org). It is estimated that as many as 1.3 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with this disease and many more remain undiagnosed.

NewLink Genetics Corporation announced that it has reached agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Special Protocol Assessment (SPA) process for a pivotal Phase 3 trial of its HyperAcute immunotherapy in pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is highly lethal and is currently an area of very significant unmet medical need. The SPA is a written agreement between NewLink as the trial sponsor and the FDA regarding the design, endpoints, and planned statistical analysis of a Phase 3 trial to be used in support of a Biologic License Application (BLA).
