NJIT researcher awarded patent for functional coating compositions of perfluoroalkyl perfluoro-phthalocyanine compounds

Sergiu M. Gorun, PhD, associate professor of chemistry at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), was awarded a patent today for a novel composition of matter. “Functional Coating Compositions of Perfluoroalkyl Perfluoro-Phthalocyanine Compounds” (US Patent Number 7,670,684) discloses a new self-contained subclass of molecules.

USPTO issues notice of allowance for Vanda Pharmaceuticals' Fanapt long-acting injectable formulation

Vanda Pharmaceuticals Inc. announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a notice of allowance for its patent application of a microsphere, long-acting injectable formulation of its antipsychotic product, Fanapt™ (iloperidone). When issued, this U.S. patent will expire on October 30, 2022, and in addition, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent term adjustment of 300 days, leading to an effective expiration date of August 26, 2023.

Patented chemical derived from sugar may be an alternative for BPA

Michael Jaffe, a professor of biomedical engineering at NJIT, has received a patent for a chemical derived from sugar. This new material is a derivative of isosorbide and may be able to replace bisphenol A (BPA) in a number of consumer products, including the lining of tin cans.

Semafore Pharmaceuticals today announced today announced the United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) has issued United States Patent Number 7,662,977 entitled “PI-3 Kinase Inhibitor Prodrugs.” This composition of matter patent covers a genus of novel compounds that includes SF1126, Semafore’s clinical stage, small molecule inhibitor of phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), two key members of the PI3K signaling pathway that is vital to several essential biological processes, such as cell proliferation and survival.

The patent claims cover the use of Apoptone to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy. QR Pharma, Inc., a developer of novel drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease (AD), announced today that it was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,625,942, a "Method of Treating Down Syndrome" by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The '942 patent covers use of Posiphen and analogs to treat cognitive impairments associated with Down Syndrome (DS). This patent valuably expands upon the original Posiphen and analog patent that claims composition of matter and use of compounds to lower amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) and thereby treat dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Genocea Biosciences secures licensing to extensive HSV antigen patent estate

Watson Laboratories files ANDA for generic Aplenzin ER in treatment of major depressive disorder

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leading global specialty pharmaceutical company, today confirmed that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc.- Florida, filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration seeking approval to market its 174 mg and 348 mg strength bupropion hydrobromide tablets prior to the expiration of patents owned by Biovail. Watson's 174 mg and 348 mg strength bupropion hydrobromide tablet products are generic versions of Biovail's Aplenzin™ ER, which is indicated for major depressive disorder.

Ethicon Endo-Surgery resolves longstanding patent litigation with Hologic

Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Hologic, Inc., and Hologic subsidiary Suros Surgical Systems, Inc., settling litigation in Ohio and dismissing pending cases in Delaware. The disputes involved patents relating to the Ethicon Endo-Surgery MAMMOTOME® Breast Biopsy System, and the Hologic ATEC and EVIVA biopsy devices. Under the terms of the agreement, Ethicon Endo-Surgery will receive $12.5 million from Hologic.
