Study examines correlation between point-of-care monitors, lactate flux during CEA procedure

CAS Medical Systems, Inc. today announced a new study to be published in the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. The study from researchers in the Departments of Anesthesia and Surgery, at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB, Canada examined the correlation between a variety of point-of-care monitors and lactate flux, an indicator of metabolic stress during carotid endarterectomy.

Adoption of standby intra-aortic balloon pump strategy during high-risk PCI needed: Study

High-risk patients undergoing a coronary procedure such as placement of a stent who electively received an intra-aortic balloon pump (a device that can help improve blood flow) prior to the procedure did not experience a significantly lower overall rate of events such as heart attack, revascularization or death, according to a study in the August 25 issue of JAMA.

Transplant surgery to correct the most common type of genetic heart disease yields similar short-term and potentially greater long-term survival rates as transplant surgery for other heart diseases, according to research reported in Circulation: Heart Failure, an American Heart Association journal.

Reducing patient body temperature with cold salt beneficial for patients undergoing balloon angioplasty

Treating heart attack patients with hypothermia reduces the amount of heart damage by more than one third after balloon angioplasty. Researchers in Lund, Sweden have today released the results of a study showing that the amount of heart damage in heart attack patients whose body temperature was lower than 35˚C (95˚F) was reduced by more than one third after they were treated with balloon angioplasty to open their clogged heart vessel.

15% of patients experience more pain, physical and emotional problems a year after surgery than before their operation and 24% have less vitality, according to a study of over 400 patients published online by the British Journal of Surgery.

Informed specific consent should be sought before blood transfusion

The authors state that there are serious infectious, as well as non-infectious risks associated with blood transfusions and that it should now be viewed as a legal requirement for patients to be informed about specific risks posed by blood transfusions. This would work in the same way as they are currently informed about risks associated with the medical treatment and/or surgery they undergo.

Jordan Hospital receives approval to open new Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center

Jordan Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received approval from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for the opening of its new, state-of-the-art Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center located on the hospital campus in Plymouth, Mass. Adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) who received medication and individual sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) showed greater improvement in symptoms through 12 months compared to patients who did not receive CBT, according to a study in the August 25 issue of JAMA.

New Halt System procedure for non-cancerous fibroid treatment

A new device manufactured by Northern California-based Halt Medical recently received FDA 510K clearance using a radio-frequency energy system to treat soft tissues. Fully qualified doctors insert the Halt System into targeted fibroids under ultrasound guidance.
