Ceremed awarded NIH SBIR grant to develop soluble carrier for topical delivery of antibiotic Vancomycin

Ceremed, Inc. was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant, the company's third in a series of grants from the National Institutes of Health to develop a versatile soluble carrier with bone hemostatic properties for targeted delivery of therapeutic agents directly to surgical sites. The recently awarded grant will aid Ceremed in its effort to develop a soluble carrier to topically deliver the antibiotic Vancomycin.

Study could lead to new therapies for acute muscle injury

A new research study published in The FASEB Journal may change how sports injuries involving muscle tissue are treated, as well as how much patient monitoring is necessary when potent anti-inflammatory drugs are prescribed for a long time. Hindustani singing, a North Indian traditional style of singing, and classical singing, such as the music of Puccini, Mozart and Wagner, vary greatly in technique and sound. Now, speech-language pathology researchers at the University of Missouri are comparing the two styles in hopes of finding a treatment for laryngeal tremors, a vocal disorder associated with many neurological disorders that can result in severe communication difficulties.

Pharmatek adds roller compaction to GMP manufacturing facilities

Pharmatek Laboratories, Inc., a premier contract development and manufacturing organization supporting the pharmaceutical industry, announced that it has added roller compaction to its solid oral dosage form manufacturing capabilities. The company has purchased two roller compactors, a pilot-scale Vector TFC-220 roller compactor with a rate of 20 kg/hour, and a Vector TFC-LAB Micro lab-scale roller compactor with a rate of 1 kg/hour. Both machines have been integrated into Pharmatek's GMP facility and are ready for GMP manufacturing.

Mandatory contraceptive policy in clinical trials is excessive and can safely be relaxed

Research ethics review committees often require all women of childbearing age who enroll in clinical trials to use contraceptives to protect against a developing fetus being exposed to potentially harmful drugs. A mandatory contraceptive policy is often imposed even when there is no evidence that a trial drug could harm a fetus or when women have no chance of becoming pregnancy. This requirement is excessive and can safely be relaxed in many cases, according to a report in IRB: Ethics & Human Research.
