University of Houston student named Social Work Student of the Year by NASW

Meghan Baker, a J.D./M.S.W. dual degree student in the Law Center and Graduate College of Social Work at the University of Houston, has been named Social Work Student of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers Texas Chapter. Baker will be honored Oct. 9 at the organization's annual conference at the Westin Galleria in Houston.

Washington Post examines Haiti rebuilding challenges

Six months after the Haitian earthquake, $506 million of the $5.3 billion pledged at a donors conference in March has been disbursed to Haiti, according to Jehane Sedky of the U.N. Development Program, CNN reports in a story investigating the aid commitments.

Attorney General moves towards increasing Patel sentence

Attorney General Cameron Dick has protested against the seven year sentence awarded to Dr. Jayant Patel on grounds that it is inadequate and fails to do justice to the seriousness of the crime. He said, “The grounds of this appeal are that these sentences are inadequate in all the circumstances and fail to reflect the gravity of the offences.”

Researchers compare impact of heat waves on mortality in different European cities

Heat waves may cause increased mortality but, until now, there has been no single scientific definition for the occasional bursts of hot weather that can strike during the summer months. Researchers writing in BioMed Central's open access journal Environmental Health have created a definition that they use to document, for the first time, how heat wave mortality impact differs between European cities.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs launched its mid-year appeal Wednesday, requesting "nearly $5 billion to meet its commitment to help 53 million people in 34 countries who need humanitarian aid this year as a result of conflict and disasters," the Associated Press reports.
