Anti-malaria drug provides key insight into potential treatments for autoimmune diseases

In a study published recently in the journal Science Signaling Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) scientists demonstrate on the molecular level how the anti-malaria drug chloroquine represses inflammation, which may provide a blueprint for new strategies for treating inflammation and a multitude of autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and certain cancers.

Nano-patterned plastic to advance stem cell research

Scientists have developed a novel plastic surface which overcomes the difficulties associated with growing adult stem cells. Standard surfaces have proved limited for growing large amounts and retaining the stem cells' useful characteristics. This discovery could lead to the creation of stem cell therapies for re-growing bone and tissue, and also for conditions such as arthritis. The study was carried out by Glasgow and Southampton universities.

FDA warns consumers not to drink raw milk from Tucker Adkins Dairy

The FDA is working with officials in North Carolina and South Carolina to investigate an outbreak of campylobacteriosis in three people who consumed raw milk from Tucker Adkins Dairy in York, S.C. The three confirmed cases and another five probable cases are from three different households and each case reports that prior to becoming ill they consumed raw milk that was obtained from Tucker Adkins Dairy on June 14, 2011.

Teva, Amgen settle G-CSF patent litigation

Amgen announced today that the United States (U.S.) District Court in Pennsylvania has entered final judgment and a permanent injunction against Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA prohibiting them from infringing Amgen's patents relating to human G-CSF and methods for its use.

Decision Resources, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms focusing on pharmaceutical and healthcare issues, finds that while Amgen/Pfizer's Enbrel was the most widely used tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha inhibitor for recently treated psoriatic arthritis patients in the fourth quarter of 2010, Abbott's Humira has superseded Enbrel as an early-line TNF-alpha inhibitor for newly diagnosed psoriatic arthritis patients.
