International study to test effectiveness of celecoxib in preventing growth of precancerous polyps

Rush University Medical Center is testing whether celecoxib, known by its brand name Celebrex, can help prevent the growth of precancerous polyps that form in the colon, rectum and small intestine of children with an inheritable genetic disease called familial adenomatous polyposis.

Trubion Pharmaceuticals to present promising data from Phase 1 studies of SBI-087, SBI-087

Trubion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the acceptance of two Phase 1 data presentations on SBI-087 (PF-05230895) at the 2010 annual congress of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) in Rome, Italy. Presentations will include promising data from a Phase 1 study of SBI-087 for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a Phase 1 study of SBI-087 for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Copies of both abstracts are available at http://www.eular.org. SBI-087 is Trubion's next-generation CD20-directed small modular immunopharmaceutical (SMIP™) product candidate and is being developed in collaboration with Pfizer.

27-year-old sickle cell disease patient undergoes multiple joint replacement surgery

Fortis Hospitals Mulund, Mumbai, performed a multiple joint replacement surgery on a 27 year old young Nigerian patient. Rebacca underwent a hip and a shoulder replacement surgery by Dr. Sachin Bhonsle, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, after years of suffering in pain and immobility.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals provides update on REGN727, REGN475 antibody product candidates

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (REGN) provided an update on two antibody product candidates in its pipeline and scheduled its first Investor Day to be held in New York City on July 15, 2010. Both product candidates, REGN727 (SAR236553) and, REGN475 (SAR164877) are being developed with sanofi-aventis under a global, strategic collaboration to discover, develop, and commercialize fully human antibodies.

NIH awards PLx Pharma multiple grants for development of GI safer NSAIDs

Forest, Almirall to present data on aclidinium bromide for COPD and LAS100977 for asthma at ATS conference

Forest Laboratories, Inc. and Almirall, S.A. today announced that they are presenting data from several studies of two investigational inhaled respiratory compounds at the annual American Thoracic Society International Conference taking place in New Orleans May 14-19, 2010. Data on aclidinium bromide, an inhaled muscarinic antagonist, which is in Phase III development for COPD, and LAS100977, a long-acting beta 2-agonist, in Phase II development for asthma, will be presented in 11 separate posters.

Free health clinics still drawing large crowds in cities across U.S.

Parade: A series of no-cost health care clinics are making their way across America. In Atlanta 1,050 volunteers gave their time to serve uninsured Americans who needed medical care. "The Atlanta mega-clinic was the sixth in a series that began in September. (The first was held in Houston in partnership with TV talk-show host and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz.)

NIAMS, NINDS announce 5-year, $7.5M natural history study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) are launching a five-year, $7.5 million natural history study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne), a degenerative genetically-linked neuromuscular disease. The study aims to validate non-invasive approaches to monitor the progression and treatment of Duchenne, and holds potential to facilitate the development of promising new therapies for people with the disease.

NIH awards UF scientists $7.5M for study of MRI technology in evaluating children with DMD

Duchenne muscular dystrophy research at the University of Florida got a major boost with the award of $7.5 million in National Institutes of Health funding to study the use of magnetic resonance imaging in determining the natural progression of the disease.

Positive preclinical results of VB-201 for treatment of psoriasis presented at 2010 SID Annual Meeting

VBL Therapeutics today announced positive preclinical results evaluating VB-201 for the treatment of psoriasis. VB-201 is a first-in-class, orally administered immune response modifier expected to reduce inflammation by targeting key pro-inflammatory cytokines. Today's data suggest that VB-201 has significant anti-inflammatory properties that are active against psoriasis; an ongoing Phase 2 efficacy and safety study is currently evaluating VB-201 for the treatment of patients with psoriasis.
