UPM's LIA group creates new DNA-based biological sensor for applications in genetic diagnostics

The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid's Artificial Intelligence Group (LIA), based at the Facultad de Informática, has created a new DNA-based biological sensor that has potential applications in the field of genetic diagnostics. The basic sensor design was presented at the 2010 Conference on Unconventional Computation.

6th Decade of the Mind Conference to be held in Singapore

A total of 15 world renowned cognitive scientists have been invited to share recent advances in their respective fields at the 6th Decade of the Mind Conference to be held at Fusionopolis from 18 - 20 October 2010. Jointly organised by A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), MINDEF's Defence Research & Technology Office (DRTech) and NUS's Temasek Laboratories, it is the first such conference in Asia to promote awareness of Cognitive Science research done in Asia and from around the world.

Novel approach to automated detection of bacterial pathogens in food

Researchers from the School of Science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and the Bindley Bioscience Center at Purdue University have developed a novel approach to automated detection and classification of harmful bacteria in food. The investigators have designed and implemented a sophisticated statistical approach that allows computers to improve their ability to detect the presence of bacterial contamination in tested samples.

MRI brain scans can accurately predict young person's age

Using MRI technology and mathematical analysis, researchers at Oregon Health & Science University and Washington University in St. Louis are now able to accurately predict a young person's age simply by studying their brain scans. The research, which will likely have several clinical applications, including assessment and diagnosis, is published in the current edition of the journal Science.

SRI and Taiho collaborate to advance clinical development of TAS-108 breast cancer program

SRI International, an independent nonprofit research and development organization, announced today that it has assumed responsibility for further clinical development of the TAS-108 breast cancer program, in cooperation with Taiho Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd., a leading Japanese pharmaceutical company. Scientists develop new metabolite analysis technique for accurate ovarian cancer detection

Scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology have attained very promising results on their initial investigations of a new test for ovarian cancer. Using a new technique involving mass spectrometry of a single drop of blood serum, the test correctly identified women with ovarian cancer in 100 percent of the patients tested. The results can be found online in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, & Prevention Research.

EEG patterns can predict schizophrenia patients' response to clozapine therapy

A commonplace electroencephalography (EEG) test may hold the key to predicting whether a person will respond to certain prescribed drugs, particularly those related to psychiatric conditions.In a study to be published by Clinical Neurophysiology, and now posted online, engineering and health sciences researchers at McMaster University applied machine learning to EEG patterns and successfully predicted how patients with schizophrenia would respond to clozapine therapy.
