GSK receives FDA approval for combination of Mekinist with Tafinlar for treatment of melanoma

GlaxoSmithKline plc announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Mekinist® (trametinib) for use in combination with Tafinlar® (dabrafenib) for the treatment of patients with unresectable melanoma (melanoma that cannot be removed by surgery) or metastatic melanoma (melanoma which has spread to other parts of the body) with BRAF V600E or V600K mutations.

Surgery leads to greater long-term improvement for patients with herniated discs in lower spine

For patients with herniated discs in the lower (lumbar) spine, surgery leads to greater long-term improvement in pain, functioning, and disability compared to nonsurgical treatment, concludes an eight year follow-up study in Spine. The journal is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

The Massachusetts pharmacy whose tainted steroid injections were blamed for a deadly outbreak of fungal meningitis has agreed to pay more than $100 million to victims and their families, according to lawyers involved in a tentative settlement.

St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, has launched a clinical study to evaluate the combination of peripheral nerve field stimulation, and spinal cord stimulation, to determine whether the two therapies together offer more effective management of chronic low back and leg pain than SCS alone.
