Study may allow patients with multiple breast lesions to consider breast-conserving therapy as treatment option

Patients with multiple tumors in the same breast who underwent a lumpectomy followed by radiation therapy had local recurrence rates comparable to those historically observed in patients with a single tumor, according to results from the ACOSOG Z11102 (Alliance) prospective phase II clinical trial, which were presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held December 6-10, 2022.

Addition of capivasertib to fulvestrant doubles progression-free survival in HR-positive breast cancer patients

In patients with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, HER2-negative tumors resistant to aromatase inhibitors, addition of the investigational AKT inhibitor capivasertib to fulvestrant (Faslodex) doubled the median progression-free survival compared with placebo plus fulvestrant in the phase III CAPItello-291 clinical trial, according to results presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held December 6-10, 2022.

Study reports overall response of HER2-low breast cancer patients to neoadjuvant T-DXd treatment

Patients with localized, hormone receptor-positive, HER2-low breast cancer treated with trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd, Enhertu) in the neoadjuvant setting had an overall response rate of 75 percent in the absence of anastrozole and 63 percent in combination with anastrozole, according to results from the phase II TRIO-US B-12 TALENT trial presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held December 6-10, 2022.

Genomic assay can help identify breast cancer patients who may benefit from ovarian suppression therapy

Among premenopausal women with hormone receptor (HR)-positive, early-stage breast cancer enrolled in the SOFT trial, those with a high score on a genomic assay called Breast Cancer Index (BCI) had increased risk of distant recurrence, and those with low BCI benefited more from the addition of ovarian suppression therapy to endocrine therapy after 12 years of follow-up, according to data presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, held December 6-10, 2022.
