EMA COMP grants orphan medicinal product designation for Raptor's DR Cysteamine for cystinosis

Raptor Pharmaceutical Corp., announced that the European Medicines Agency's ("EMA") Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products ("COMP") has issued a positive opinion recommending orphan medicinal product designation for DR Cysteamine for the potential treatment of cystinosis.

Inovio commences immunization in U.S. Phase I clinical trial of SynCon H5N1 influenza DNA vaccine

Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a leader in the development of therapeutic and preventive vaccines against cancers and infectious diseases, announced today that it has immunized its first subject in a U.S. Phase I clinical trial to evaluate its SynCon™ H5N1 (avian) influenza DNA vaccine, VGX-3400X.

Pieris commences PRS-050 anti-VEGF Anticalin Phase I clinical trial for cancer

Pieris AG announced today the initiation of a Phase I clinical trial in cancer patients for its lead program, PRS-050, an anti-VEGF Anticalin. The trial is an open-label, dose-escalating evaluation of the compound's safety and tolerability in patients with solid tumors. Conducted at three sites in Germany, the trial is underway and patients from the first cohort have been dosed.

Women who drink boiled coffee at lower risk of breast cancer

Women who drink Scandinavian boiled coffee, which chemically resembles of French press and Turkish/Greek coffee, more than four times a day run a lower risk of developing breast cancer than women who drink coffee less than once a day. This is shown by Lena Nilsson and her associates at Umeå University in an article in the journal Cancer Causes & Control.

CT angiography not necessary in patients suspected with pulmonary embolism

A new study suggests that computed tomography (CT) angiography might be unnecessary in many patients suspected of having pulmonary embolism (PE), based on the results of risk assessment analysis. PE risk assessment could help reduce radiation exposure and costs associated with CT angiography. The results of the study appear in the online edition and August print issue of the journal Radiology.

ATA members raise concern about reduction in dietary iodine intake

Following publication of an article in the February 18 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine (Vol. 362 No. 7 pp 590-599) by Bibbins-Domingo, et al. that projected the effect of moderate dietary salt reductions on future cardiac disease rates, several members of the American Thyroid Association, concerned about the subsequent potential reduction in availability of iodine, have responded with a letter in the current issue of the NEJM (Vol. 362 No. 23 pp 2224-2226).

Sulindac shuts down cancer cell growth, initiates cell death: Study

Without knowing exactly why, scientists have long observed that people who regularly take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin have lower incidences of certain types of cancer. Now, in a study appearing in Cancer Cell on June 15, investigators at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and their colleagues have figured out how one NSAID, called Sulindac, inhibits tumor growth.

Micromet's blinatumomab demonstrates potential to change outcome for patients with ALL

Micromet, Inc. today announced the presentation of updated results from a Phase 2 trial of the Company's lead product candidate blinatumomab (MT103) in adult patients with minimal residual disease (MRD) positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Results of the analysis demonstrate that a prolonged hematologic relapse free survival was observed in patients treated with blinatumomab.
