Researchers find link between telomeres and longevity

A team led by researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University has found a clear link between living to 100 and inheriting a hyperactive version of an enzyme that rebuilds telomeres - the tip ends of chromosomes. The findings appear in the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

New robotic surgical systems from El Camino Hospital

El Camino Hospital, the hospital of Silicon Valley, expands its minimally invasive surgical program to three da Vinci® Si HD Surgical Systems. The Bend Memorial Clinic is recruiting patients for a Phase III lung cancer trial aimed at preventing the disease’s recurrence in previously treated patients. Specifically, the trial is evaluating the potential of an immunotherapy called Antigen-Specific Cancer Immunotherapeutic (ASCI) for the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated announced today that holders of its 4.75% Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes due 2013 have agreed to exchange approximately $109.0 million in aggregate principal amount of those notes and accrued interest for approximately 4.8 million shares of the Company’s common stock, which is approximately 140,000 shares more than the number of shares into which the notes were convertible under their original terms.

In a recent New York Times article, the American Cancer Society (ACS) ignited a major controversy over the benefits of cancer screening, specifically with regards to their breast and prostate cancer guidelines. In the article, Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the ACS, responded to a study in the current issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

First evidence-based, multidisciplinary treatment guidelines for brain metastases patients to be published

Anthony Asher, MD, FACS, of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine Associates in Charlotte, NC, has co-authored the first evidence-based, multidisciplinary treatment guidelines for brain metastases patients. These guidelines were recently presented at the Congress of Neurological Surgeons 2009 Annual Meeting in New Orleans, and were developed over the last year by a 20-member panel from various medical specialties.

Prostate size growth not necessarily a predictor of development of cancer

New Mayo Clinic research studied the association between prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels and prostate size and found that routine annual evaluation of prostate growth is not necessarily a predictor for the development of prostate cancer. However the study suggests that if a man's PSA level is rising quickly, a prostate biopsy is reasonable to determine if he has prostate cancer.

Memorial Blood Centers today announced the details of its annual partnership program with Second Harvest Heartland, designed to restock the life-saving blood supplies at local hospitals while helping to fill area food shelves as well.
