Carcinoembryonic antigen co-discoverer Dr. Phil Gold to be inducted into The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame

Prof. Heather Munroe-Blum, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of McGill University, and the Hon. Arthur T. Porter, Director General and CEO of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), welcome the news that Dr. Phil Gold is to be inducted into The Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. In 1965, Dr. Gold co-discovered the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), the first clinically useful human tumour marker that revolutionized the diagnosis and management of cancer.

Herrick Foundation's $3M grant for cancer research

The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute announced today it received a $3 million grant from the Herrick Foundation. The initial gift of $1 million launches The Herrick Foundation Cancer Research Challenge, a special initiative to increase research funding at the Karmanos Cancer Institute over the next four years. The additional commitment of $2 million will be given in match funding.

Genzyme commences patient enrollment in Genz-112638 phase 3 trials

Genzyme Corporation today announced that the company has begun enrollment in the first of two global, multi-center, phase 3 trials of Genz-112638, a potential new oral therapy for Gaucher disease type 1. The two multi-national, multi-center trials are being conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of the small molecule.

Otsuka Pharmaceutical acquires newly issued common shares of MethylGene

Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Otsuka Holdings Co., Ltd. based in Japan, announces that on October 20, 2009, pursuant to the private placement disclosed on October 14, 2009, it acquired 3,686,182 newly issued common shares of MethylGene Inc. Following the closing of this private placement, Otsuka Pharmaceutical owns 9.12% of the issued and outstanding common shares of MethylGene.

New tools needed to identify men and women at risk for the most aggressive cancers

Twenty years of screening for breast and prostate cancer - the most diagnosed cancer for women and men - have not brought the anticipated decline in deaths from these diseases, argue experts from the University of California, San Francisco and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in an opinion piece published in the "Journal of the American Medical Association."

NIH grant for Lpath to advance clinical development of its antibody therapeutics

The National Cancer Institute's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program has awarded Lpath (OTCBB: LPTN), the category leader in lipidomics-based therapeutics, two Phase 1 grants totaling $0.3 million. This follows a series of other SBIR grants awarded to Lpath totaling $6.9 million, including a $3.0 million Phase 2 bridge grant from the NCI awarded this past June.

CCS is the largest funder of childhood and adolescent cancer research in the charitable sector

A new report released today by the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance reveals that the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the largest funder of childhood and adolescent cancer research in the charitable sector, contributing 23 per cent of total funding. The B.C. and Yukon division of the CCS contributes more than 40 per cent of that funding through donations from Cops for Cancer.
