New Tandem fund of $300 million presents financing option for Canada’s biotechnology industry

The new Tandem fund of $300 million announced last week presents a much-needed financing option for Canada’s biotechnology industry. The Fund received investments from the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), and Export Development Canada (EDC), contributing $80 and $75 million respectively to the Fund.

Decline in reducing youth smoking and increase in smokeless tobacco use

The 2009 Monitoring the Future Survey released today by the National Institute of Drug Abuse shows that the nation continues to make gradual progress in reducing youth smoking, but declines have slowed significantly compared to the dramatic gains early in the decade. In especially troubling news, the survey also finds that smokeless tobacco use has increased among 10th and 12th graders in recent years, a period during which tobacco companies have introduced a slew of new smokeless tobacco products and significantly increased marketing for smokeless tobacco.

Postmenopausal women who take antidepressants face increased risk for stroke and death

Postmenopausal women who take antidepressants face a small but statistically significant increased risk for stroke and death compared with those who do not take the drugs. The new findings are from the federally-funded, multi-institution, Women's Health Initiative Study sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, and the results are published in the December 14 online edition of Archives of Internal Medicine.
