Sagent Pharmaceuticals adds fluconazole injection to its line of premixed bags

Sagent Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a privately held specialty pharmaceutical company, today announced that it has launched fluconazole injection in premix bags. IMS Health estimates that 2008 U.S. sales of fluconazole injection approximated $18 million. Sagent will begin marketing and shipping fluconazole bags immediately.

Cell cycle checkpoints act like molecular tripwires for damaged cells, forcing them to pause and take stock. Leave the tripwire in place for too long, though, and cancer cells will press on regardless, making them resistant to the lethal effects of certain types of chemotherapy, according to researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.

Study suspects involvement of PPAR-γ in gastric carcinogenesis

Recently, the potential of PPAR-γ as a target for the prevention and treatment of cancer has been widely studied. However, the potential therapeutic role of PPAR-γ agonists has been questioned, based on contradictory results. Studies using animal models of colon cancer found that PPAR-γ agonists increased the development of colon tumors.

Novelos Therapeutics enters into a definitive agreement with Purdue Pharma to raise funds

Novelos Therapeutics, Inc. (OTCBB: NVLT), a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of therapeutics to treat cancer and hepatitis, today announced that Novelos entered into a definitive agreement with Purdue Pharma L.P., an existing investor, to sell 13,636,364 shares of its common stock and warrants, expiring on December 31, 2015, to purchase an aggregate of approximately 4,772,728 shares of common stock at an exercise price of $0.66 per share, for gross proceeds of $9 million.

Researchers reveal that genes contributing to drug resistance in NSCLC disease could be predicted

The genes that may contribute to drug resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can be predicted. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Cancer found good correlation between genes believed to be involved in drug sensitivity and resistance and actual in vitro chemosensitivity.

Patients enrolled in the TREAT Phase 3 study treated with Aranesp to a target hemoglobin of 13 g/dL

Amgen today announced that in a large, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, Phase 3 study of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) (not requiring dialysis), anemia and type-2 diabetes (the Trial to Reduce Cardiovascular Endpoints with Aranesp((R)) Therapy, or TREAT), treatment of anemia with Aranesp((R) )(darbepoetin alfa) to a hemoglobin target of 13 g/dL had no statistically significant effect on either of two primary endpoints compared with placebo treatment.

Cell Therapeutics' NDA for Pixantrone accepted by the FDA

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) (Nasdaq and MTA: CTIC) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted and has filed for review the Company's New Drug Application (NDA) for pixantrone as treatment for relapsed or refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL).
