Abbott is providing $180,000 in support to help address the recent cholera outbreak in central Haiti. This includes a $25,000 grant from the Abbott Fund to Partners In Health, and $155,000 in donated Abbott rehydration solutions and antibiotics.

Cholera epidemic and political violence dogs upcoming Haiti elections

With elections coming up in Haiti, major earthquakes, a cholera epidemic and fears of political violence rear their ugly heads in the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. Electoral officials still say the presidential and legislative polls will go ahead as scheduled on November 28, despite the cholera outbreak. The epidemic has killed more than 290 people and sickened more than 4,000 since last week, triggering a major multinational treatment and prevention operation.

Cholera epidemic in Haiti persists despite slow down in fatalities

"A multinational medical response has slowed deaths in a Haitian cholera epidemic that has killed more than 250 people so far, but the outbreak is likely to widen, a senior U.N. official said on Sunday," Reuters reports. The U.N., Haitian government and aid partners "have launched a major effort to try to contain the epidemic" of more than 3,000 cases in the country so far (Delva, 10/25). The New York Times reports that the death rate, according to the Haitian government, has "declined - from 10.6 percent of known cases three days earlier to 8.2 percent now."

Haiti cholera epidemic abates

The rate of deaths in Haiti's cholera epidemic slowed on Monday. This followed a multinational medical operation scale up to limit the spread of an outbreak that has killed 259 people in the earthquake-hit country. However Haitian and international health authorities are still bracing for more cases before the epidemic is finally controlled. So far, the epidemic has mostly impacted two rural central Haitian provinces, Artibonite and Center, along with the few isolated cases in the capital Port-au-Prince. Suspected cases have also been reported in the Nord and Sud provinces.

Floods in west and central Africa have killed 377 people and affected almost 1.5 million people since the start of the rainy season in June, the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said on Tuesday, Agence France-Presse reports.

The report is based on more than 200 interviews, conducted over a six-month period in 2009, of people in 53 villages across three regions of the country, according to an HRW press release (10/19).

West African cholera epidemic exacerbated by flooding; more than 1,800 deaths reported

The WHO says 1,879 deaths have been reported from cholera in Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon and Niger, the Associated Press reports. The wave of cholera started a few months ago and nearly 40,500 cases have been reported in the region so far. Nigeria alone has experienced nearly 1,200 deaths, its worst cholera outbreak in two decades, according to the article (10/12).

395 new vaccines being developed for infectious diseases: PhRMA

Critical challenges remain in the centuries-old battles against infectious diseases, particularly as bacteria and viruses mutate and as the threat of bioterrorism grows. Responding to this need, America's biopharmaceutical research companies this year have 395 new medicines and vaccines in the pipeline to fight infectious diseases.
