McGill University granted 'Orphan Drug Designation' for pulmonary infection drug fenretinide

Centocor Ortho Biotech acquires RespiVert

Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc. today announced that it has acquired RespiVert Ltd., a privately held drug discovery company focused on developing small-molecule, inhaled therapies for the treatment of pulmonary diseases. The company's lead compounds, RV-568 and RV-1088, narrow spectrum kinase inhibitors with a unique profile of anti-inflammatory activities, are progressing into clinical development as potential first-in-class treatments for moderate to severe asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

GenMark Diagnostics prices initial public offering

GenMark Diagnostics, Inc., a provider of automated, multiplex molecular diagnostic testing systems, announced today that its initial public offering of 4,600,000 shares of its common stock has been priced at $6.00 per share. The shares are expected to begin trading today on the NASDAQ Global Market under the ticker symbol "GNMK." In addition, GenMark has granted the underwriters a 30-day option to purchase up to an additional 690,000 shares to cover over-allotments, if any.

Vertex reports 75% patients with HCV achieve viral cure with 12-week telaprevir-based combination regimen

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced that 75% of people chronically infected with genotype 1 hepatitis C virus (HCV) who had not previously been treated achieved a sustained viral response (SVR or viral cure) after receiving a 12-week telaprevir-based combination regimen, followed by treatment with pegylated-interferon and ribavirin alone, in the Phase 3 ADVANCE trial.

USPTO issues composition of matter patent for Transave's ARIKACE

Transave Inc. today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued an important composition of matter patent (U.S. Patent No. 7,718,189) for liposomal aminoglycoside formulations including its lead compound, ARIKACE™ (liposomal amikacin for inhalation). Thymosin beta 4 reduces brain tissue damage, improves brain function in rats: Research paper
