Birner Dental Management Services' 2009 net income up 7.5%

Birner Dental Management Services, Inc., operators of PERFECT TEETH® dental practices, announced results for the year and quarter ended December 31, 2009. For the year ended December 31, 2009, revenue increased $557,000, or 0.9%, to $59.6 million. The Company's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortization and non-cash expense associated with stock-based compensation ("Adjusted EBITDA") increased $101,000, or 1.5%, to $6.9 million.

Using a novel animal model to study craniofacial pain, researchers at Oregon Health & Science University's School of Dentistry have discovered that when tissues are inflamed, the nerve cells carrying pain information from the head to the brain produce in large quantities a protein involved in pain signaling.

Bergen research group adopts nanotechnology for cancer research

Professor James Lorens and his team at the University of Bergen's Department of Biomedicine are using nanotechnology to study how to make cells form new blood vessels, both within the patient's body and in the laboratory. In the next phase the team will use this knowledge to investigate the molecular mechanisms that govern the progression of cancer.

LSUHSC: Differences in drug metabolism can lead to differences in the effectiveness of candidate drug

Research led by Wayne L. Backes, PhD, Professor of Pharmacology and Associate Dean for Research at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans School of Medicine, has found that drug metabolism depends not only upon which enzymes are present in an individual, but also how they interact, and that can be the difference in whether a drug is safely eliminated from the body or is converted into a toxic or carcinogenic byproduct.

2010 Max Planck Research Award for Dr. Timothy Bromage from NYU College of Dentistry

New York University College of Dentistry's Dr. Timothy Bromage has been selected to receive the 2010 Max Planck Research Award. Dr. Bromage will collaborate with Dr. Friedemann Schrenk of Frankfurt's Senckenberg Research Institute to research the microanatomical structure of bones and teeth, and the links between metabolic states, growth rates, life spans, and biological features such as sex and body size.

Review suggests ion exchange resins are not effective for hyperkalemia
