AngioScore receives FDA marketing clearance for PTA Scoring Balloon Catheter

AngioScore, Inc., a developer of novel angioplasty catheters for use in the treatment of cardiovascular disease, announced today that the company has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market its AngioSculpt® PTA Scoring Balloon Catheter for dilatation of lesions in renal arteries.

Most transplant candidates agree to receive kidney from donor at increased risk of viral infection

Most kidney transplant candidates are willing to receive a kidney from a donor at increased risk of viral infection, according to a study appearing in an upcoming issue of the Clinical Journal of the American Society Nephrology. The results suggest that kidney disease patients can make rational tradeoffs between the virtues and risks conferred by donated kidneys.

FDA approves APP Pharmaceuticals' Indomethacin for Injection

Lipitor 80 mg may help reduce risk of major cardiovascular events in high-risk patients

Lipitor® (atorvastatin calcium) 80 mg was associated with a significantly reduced risk of major cardiovascular events compared with Lipitor 10 mg among patients with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) who were obese or had metabolic syndrome. These data, from two sub-analyses of the Treating to New Targets (TNT) trial that were designed and completed following the completion of TNT, were presented today at the 59th Annual Scientific Session of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in Atlanta, Ga.

NKF: Certain ethnic minorities are at higher risk for developing CKD

Certain ethnic minorities, including African Americans and Hispanics, are at a higher risk than the general population for developing potentially life-threatening chronic kidney disease (CKD), which has been linked to higher rates of diabetes and high blood pressure, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

EXPLORE-Xa study: Betrixaban reduces CRNM bleeds compared to dose-adjusted warfarin

Portola Pharmaceuticals and Merck today announced the results of EXPLORE-Xa, a Phase 2 exploratory, dose finding study of betrixaban, an investigational oral direct Factor Xa inhibitor. Results showed that a once-daily dose of oral betrixaban, given to patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter and at least one risk factor for stroke, reduced the incidence of major and clinically relevant non-major (CRNM) bleeds compared to dose-adjusted warfarin.

Valsartan delays progression to type 2 diabetes in IGT patients: NAVIGATOR study

Poor, minority adults with chronic kidney disease face increase risk of developing ESRD

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) afflicts a large number of younger minority adults receiving medical care in settings that serve the uninsured and underinsured (settings collectively known as the healthcare safety net). Poor, minority adults with moderate to severe CKD are also two to four times more likely to progress to kidney failure than non-Hispanic whites.
