Breast cancer continues to rise in Iraq, and scientists have established the Iraqi National Cancer Research Program to better understand the underlying molecular and environmental causes in an effort to curb the incidence of cancer.

Bilateral oophorectomy may do more harm than good

Removal of the ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) while performing a hysterectomy is common practice to prevent the subsequent development of ovarian cancer. This prophylactic procedure is performed in 55% of all U.S. women having a hysterectomy, or approximately 300,000 times each year. An article in the March/April issue of The Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology suggests that this procedure may do more harm than good.

Genomic Health, Inc. today announced the publication of positive results from a large international study which demonstrated that the Oncotype DX® breast cancer Recurrence Score® (RS) result is a significant independent predictor of distant recurrence in both node-negative and node-positive, hormone receptor-positive, postmenopausal breast cancer patients who are treated with either anastrozole or tamoxifen.

Exposure to BPA during pregnancy causes permanent abnormalities in uterus of offspring

Researchers at Yale School of Medicine have discovered that exposure during pregnancy to Bisphenol A (BPA), a common component of plastics, causes permanent abnormalities in the uterus of offspring, including alteration in their DNA. The findings were reported in the March issue of Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology.

A new study has found that one in three early-stage breast cancer patients who received genomic testing when deciding about treatment options felt they did not fully understand their discussions with physicians about their test results and their risk of recurrence. BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that it has received commitments from two institutional investors to purchase $18 million of securities in a registered direct offering. The investors are Great Point Partners, LLC and Deerfield Management Company. BioSante expects to receive net proceeds of approximately $17.5 million after deducting placement agent fees and other offering expenses.
