Positive results from Lexicon’s LX4211 Phase 2b trial on type 2 diabetes

Lexicon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., announced today that LX4211, an investigational, oral, dual inhibitor of sodium glucose transporters 1 and 2 (SGLT1 and SGLT2), showed substantial, dose-dependent, statistically-significant reductions in hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in a Phase 2b trial in patients diagnosed with poorly-controlled type 2 diabetes who were concurrently treated with metformin, an established diabetes therapy.

Scientists identify cause of double-cortex syndrome

Researchers at McGill University have discovered the cause of an inherited form of epilepsy. The disease, known as double-cortex syndrome, primarily affects females and arises from mutations on a gene located on the X chromosome. Drs. Susanne Bechstedt and Gary Brouhard of the Department of Biology have used a highly advanced microscope to discover how these mutations cause a malformation of the human brain.

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have uncovered a new signal transduction pathway specifically devoted to the regulation of alternative RNA splicing, a process that allows a single gene to produce or code multiple types of protein variants.
