New SACS Instrument launched to assess and classify peristomal skin lesions

A new evidence-based instrument to assess and classify peristomal skin lesions was launched at the 2010 Joint Conference of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society and World Council of Enterostomal Therapists. The instrument, known as the SACS Instrument, represents the first content-validated instrument to objectively assess and classify peristomal lesions by type and location in relation to an individual's stoma.

Researchers from GE Global Research announced today that they have been awarded a four-year, $4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, to optimize a new nerve labeling agent and imaging system. A 17-year-long community study looking at symptoms of enlarged prostate in over 2,000 men age 40 to 79 years suggests that surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) offers more relief from incontinence and obstruction symptoms than treatment from drug-based therapy, according to a new study by researchers at Mayo Clinic.

Two common operations for SUI help women achieve similar levels of dryness: Study

Two common operations for stress urinary incontinence help women achieve similar levels of dryness, according to a team of urologists and urogynecologists who compared the treatments in a large U.S. trial supported by the National Institutes of Health. The study is being released online May 17, 2010, by the New England Journal of Medicine to coincide with a presentation at the annual meeting of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Results will appear in the June 3 print edition.
