BARDA awards contract to Emergent BioSolutions for anthrax vaccine development

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) awarded a $51 million contract to Emergent BioSolutions, Inc., of Rockville, Md., for the development of a new anthrax vaccine using the protective antigen (rPA) to stimulate a protective immune response that neutralizes the anthrax toxins.

Friendship paradox helps analyze social network, monitor member health to predict flu outbreak

Nicholas Christakis, professor of medicine, medical sociology and sociology at Harvard University, and James Fowler, professor of medical genetics and political science at the University of California, San Diego, used the paradox to study the 2009 flu epidemic among 744 students. The findings, the researchers say, point to a novel method for early detection of contagious outbreaks.

Researchers investigate antimicrobial activity of Aganocide compounds against H1N1

Fears over the influenza A virus (H1N1; sometimes referred to as swine flu) have motivated researchers to investigate the antimicrobial activity of the Aganocide compounds against viruses. In a study presented at this year's Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, a team led by Professor Markus Nagl, MD of Medical University of Innsbruck and including D. Debabov, PhD and K. Hybiske, PhD of NovaBay Pharmaceuticals evaluated the in vitro virucidal activity of three compounds: N-chlorotaurine, a compound produced by human phagocytes; and two NCT analogs, NVC-612 and NVC-422.

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced preliminary top-line results from its multinational, open-label, single-arm trial evaluating 200 mg once-daily oral forodesine in the treatment of relapsed or refractory cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), as well as interim results from the Company's exploratory Phase 2 study to investigate the efficacy and safety of 200 mg twice-daily oral forodesine as monotherapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL).

Sanofi Pasteur files Fluzone Intradermal influenza virus vaccine sBLA with FDA

Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis Group, announced today that it has filed a Supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Fluzone® Intradermal (Influenza Virus Vaccine). The file has been accepted by the FDA and an action date is anticipated in the first half of 2011.

Biota Holdings Limited today announced that Daiichi Sankyo has received approval to manufacture and market Inavir® in Japan.
