GHIT Fund announces grants to speed up innovative drug development for neglected diseases

The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund, a new public health partnership that is bringing Japanese know-how and investment to the global fight against infectious diseases, today announced three grants worth a total of US$6.8 million to speed the development of innovative drugs for some of the world’s most neglected diseases—schistosomiasis, Chagas disease and parasitic roundworms.

Twenty years after the Rwandan Genocide left nearly 1 million dead and 2 million homeless, Binghamton University is playing a role in improving the nation's healthcare. Karen Feltham, a clinical instructor in the Decker School of Nursing, spent the 2013 fall semester in Rwanda working with women in the Rwandan Midwives Association.

Class, ancestry and medication are factors in cardiac risk for lupus patients

New research published in Rheumatology, the international, peer-reviewed scientific journal, has suggested that systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients of African descent and from lower socioeconomic groups face a higher risk of primary cardiac disease. However, those taking anti-malarial drugs reduce their risk.

Notre Dame biologists awarded $23M research grant to prevent malaria and dengue fever

Notre Dame biologists Nicole Achee and Neil Lobo are leaders of an international $23 million research grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Their five-year project will generate the data required to show the effectiveness of a new paradigm in mosquito control -spatial repellency - for the prevention of two important mosquito-borne diseases: malaria and dengue fever.

Warmer temperatures allow malaria to spread to higher elevations

Malaria, a mosquito-borne disease, infects more than 300 million people each year. Cooler highland regions have historically provided havens from malaria, but it has been predicted that the disease could be especially sensitive to climate change, since both the Plasmodium parasites that cause it and the Anopheles mosquitoes that spread it thrive at warm temperatures. The potential impact of global warming on the worldwide incidence of malaria has been debated for more than two decades.

A-PARADDISE consortium obtains funds to develop innovative therapies for neglected parasitic diseases

The international consortium A-PARADDISE (Anti-Parasitic Drug Discovery in Epigenetics), coordinated by Inserm, has just obtained funds of €6 million from the European Commission to conduct large-scale testing of innovative therapies against four neglected parasitic diseases: schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and malaria.

Researchers from LSTM have found that a single genetic mutation causes resistance to DDT and pyrethroids (an insecticide class used in mosquito nets). With the continuing rise of resistance the research, published in the journal Genome Biology, is key as scientists say that this knowledge could help improve malaria control strategies.
