A new drug for the dreaded cancer melanoma is in the horizon. It is called Vemurafenib. This is a class of drug that cancer researchers are applauding today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's annual meeting in Chicago.

Study links loss of PTEN gene with patient's response to melanoma therapy

Genetic analysis of the tumors from patients with advanced melanoma can clue researchers in to how well patients will respond to a therapy that targets the growth-promoting protein called BRAF, a researcher from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania will report on Monday, June 6 at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Roche, Bristol-Myers Squibb to evaluate YERVOY and vemurafenib treatment for metastatic melanoma

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company announced today it has entered in to a clinical collaboration agreement with Roche to evaluate the utility of Bristol-Myers Squibb's CTLA-4 inhibitor, YERVOY (ipilimumab), in combination with Roche's investigational oral BRAF inhibitor, vemurafenib, in treating patients with a specific type of metastatic melanoma.

Ipilimumab and bevacizumab drugs effective in treating metatastic melanoma

A duo of drugs, each targeting a prime survival strategy of tumors, can be safely administered and are potentially more effective than either drug alone for advanced, inoperable melanomas, according to a phase 1 clinical trial led by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute investigators.

Cancer vaccine shows improved response rate in patients

A vaccine for one of the most lethal cancers, advanced melanoma, has improved response rate and progression-free survival for patients when combined with the immunotherapy drug Interleukin-2, according to research led by scientists from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Indiana University Health Goshen Center for Cancer Care.

Patient accrual complete in Provectus PH-10 Phase 2C clinical trial for treatment of psoriasis

Provectus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a development-stage oncology and dermatology biopharmaceutical company, has completed patient accrual in its Phase 2C clinical trial of PH-10 for the treatment of psoriasis. Shave biopsies accurate in initial diagnosis of suspicious skin lesions

A shave biopsy is a reasonably safe and accurate method for the initial diagnosis of melanoma, according to a study published in the April issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. In the past, some physicians have criticized shave biopsies for not providing accurate T (tumor) stage information, thereby complicating treatment planning.
