SAMHSA survey: Underage drinking rates reach more than 27.6% in the past month

More than a quarter of youth aged 12-20 (27.6 percent) drank alcohol in the past month, according to a survey by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The study shows that the underage drinking rates were as high as 40 percent in some states such as North Dakota and Vermont.

Infrafrontier project expands to include six new partners

Helmholtz Zentrum M-nchen today announced that the Infrafrontier project, funded by the European Union, has been expanded to include six partners from Canada, the Czech Republic, Austria, France and Italy. The new partners will join the effort of the other 22 members of Infrafrontier in building up an international research infrastructure to improve open access to high-quality mouse models.

Anxiety may rise again, says Rutgers University dean

Poet W.H Auden dubbed the post-World War II nuclear era the "age of anxiety" and indeed, at the time, anxiety disorders were the most commonly diagnosed mental illnesses. Yet, by the 1990s, American psychiatry was "Listening to Prozac" and instead of obsessing about angst, it focused its attention on depression.

OHA expresses strong support for creation of committee to address hospital working capital deficits

Today, the Ontario Hospital Association expressed disappointment that the 2010 Ontario Budget did not provide the hospital sector with the 2% increase to base operating funding recommended for 2010/11, but also expressed its strong support for the creation of a committee to address hospital working capital deficits and the Budget's reiteration of the government's intent to proceed with a review of the Public Hospitals Act.

Suicide is the leading cause of non-accidental death in Ontario's youths aged 10 to 19, claiming the lives of our young people more than any other health-related cause. Mental illness is the strongest risk factor for suicide yet these youths cannot get treatment because of years of government underfunding.

Fewer than half of all substance abuse treatment facilities surveyed nationwide reported that they conduct on-site infectious disease screening, according to a new study sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

USPTO allows Pisgah Labs' patent application regarding imipramine pamoate

Pisgah Labs, a drug product development company and an active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturer (API) located in western North Carolina, has received a patent allowance in a series of patent applications. The US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has notified Pisgah Labs, Inc. that a patent application related to a therapeutically significant family of pharmaceutical polymorphic compositions of imipramine pamoate has been allowed. The patent application also includes methods of manufacturing, purifying and use in pharmaceutical preparations.

Changing drug therapy can help breast cancer patients get full benefit of tamoxifen treatment

Recently published research has shown that some breast cancer patients taking tamoxifen may not be getting the full benefit of their treatment because they have also been taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, prescribed drugs that inhibit the effect of an important enzyme.
