NICE suggests bortezomib, thalidomide for multiple myeloma patients

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has released draft guidance which recommends the drugs bortezomib and thalidomide as first-line therapies for some patients with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that affects cells in the bone marrow.

Celgene to enforce REVLIMID intellectual property rights following receipt of Paragraph IV notification letter

Celgene Corporation today announced that information was posted on the FDA Web site indicating that an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) has been received by the Office of Generic Drugs (OGD) containing a "Paragraph IV" patent certification, for REVLIMID (lenalidomide) 25 mg capsules. Celgene has not yet received the Paragraph IV notification letter identifying the filer.

Celgene receives Japan's MHLW approval for REVLIMID in deletion 5q myelodysplastic syndrome patients

Celgene International Sàrl announced that REVLIMID (lenalidomide) has been granted full marketing authorization by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) for the treatment of patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) associated with a deletion 5q cytogenic abnormality. REVLIMID was also approved in June 2010 in combination with dexamethasone, for the treatment of patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who have received at least one prior standard therapy.

FDA grants orphan drug designation to ImmunoGen's lorvotuzumab mertansine for small-cell lung cancer

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics today announced second quarter results for the period ended June 30, 2010. The Company utilized $1.13 million of cash in its operations during the quarter. The increase in net burn is reflective of increased personnel costs as well as increase in Research and Development costs associated with the planned phase II clinical trial for ICT-107.

Chronix Biomedical expands biomarker development capabilities with installation of DNA mass sequencer

Chronix Biomedical today reported that it has significantly expanded and accelerated its biomarker development capabilities with the installation of Germany's first state-of-the-art high-throughput DNA mass sequencer at the University of Göttingen, Chronix's long-time collaborator. Chronix is developing disease-specific biomarkers based on DNA fragments that are released into the bloodstream by damaged and dying (apoptotic) cells.

But the car-parts maker won bankruptcy-court approval to terminate those retiree benefits, just months after Ms. Roberts, 62 years old, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and leukemia.

Astex and MMRC commence Phase II clinical trial of AT7519 CDK inhibitor in multiple myeloma

Astex Therapeutics, the UK-based biotechnology company developing targeted therapies for oncology and virology, and the Multiple Myeloma Research Consortium announced today the initiation of a Phase II clinical trial of the cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor, AT7519, to treat patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, an incurable blood cancer. The trial is designed to investigate both single agent and combination activity of AT7519 with bortezomib (Velcade®).

Immunomedics receives additional patent for CD74 target

Immunomedics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing monoclonal antibodies to treat cancer and other serious diseases, today announced that additional claims for the patent family "Internalizing anti-CD74 antibodies and methods of use," were issued as U.S. Patent No. 7,772,373.
