Better interventions needed to prevent long-lasting consequences of TBI in children

A child who suffers a moderate or severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) may still have substantial functional disabilities and reduced quality of life 2 years after the injury. After those first 2 years, further improvement may be minimal. Better interventions are needed to prevent long-lasting consequences of TBI in children conclude the authors of a study published in Journal of Neurotrauma, a peer-reviewed journal from Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., publishers.

Targacept, Inc. today announced top-line results from a Phase 2 trial of TC-5619 as a treatment for inattentive-predominant attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHDi). In the trial, TC-5619 did not meet the primary outcome measure, change from baseline on the inattention subscale of the Conners' Adult ADHD Rating Scale-Investigator-Rated (CAARS-INV), after four weeks of treatment versus placebo.

Trigeminal Nerve Stimulation (TNS) is a novel medical treatment in which mild electrical signals stimulate branches of the trigeminal nerve in order to change the activity of targeted brain regions. The trigeminal nerve is the largest cranial nerve, and provides sensation to the face and head. Because it is a large sensory nerve, the trigeminal offers a high-bandwidth pathway for electrical signals to enter the brain. The brain areas targeted by TNS are known to play key roles in seizures, mood, and attention.
