Incidence of KPC-producing bacteria is rising in Chicago

In a survey of Chicago-area healthcare facilities, researchers at Rush University Medical Center and the Cook County Department of Public Health have found that the incidence of KPC-producing bacteria is rising. These bugs cause infections with high mortality rates and are resistant to the most commonly used antibiotics.

Joint Commission: Medical errors in hospitals tied to 'handoffs' of patients

The Joint Commission, which accredits hospitals, released an update on a collaborative project with 10 health systems tragetting the frequent errors that happen in hospitals when a patient is handed off from one provider to another.

Ventas to acquire Atria's portfolio of senior living communities

Atria Senior Living Group today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to merge its real estate with Ventas, Inc.. As part of this transaction, Ventas will purchase Atria's portfolio of senior living communities in exchange for an estimated $3.1 billion, including $1.35 billion in Ventas stock, $150 million in cash and $1.6 billion in debt either to be assumed or repaid.

Scientists find two proteins that regulates water retention in salt-sensitive hypertension

Research conducted by scientists at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans has found that two proteins in the brain act as valves to turn the hormone that regulates water retention in the body on and off. Their findings may lead to advances in treatment for diseases like high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, and cirrhosis of the liver. The research is published in the November 1, 2010 issue of Endocrinology.

Patients were misdiagnosed with pneumonia at an alarming rate when they were readmitted to the hospital shortly after a previous hospitalization for the same illness, according to two Henry Ford Hospital companion studies.

Kilauea Volcano on Hawaii's big island has been erupting on its east rift since 1983. But, in March 2008, an additional eruption vent opened at the volcano's summit, resulting in about triple the amount of sulfur dioxide gas (SO2) emissions drifting to the local community of Ka'u, raising health concerns over the risks associated with exposure to "vog," as the islanders refer to this volcanic air pollution.

A common virus that can cause coughing and mild diarrhea appears to have a major redemptive quality: the ability to kill cancer. Elsevier Middle East announces that the Journal of Infection and Public Health (JIPH) has been selected for inclusion in MEDLINE, the premier bibliographic database of the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). Citations for articles indexed, the indexing terms and the abstract printed in the journal are now searchable using PubMed (http://www.pubmed.gov). Indexing using the US National Library of Medicine's (NLM) advanced MeSH terminology will be retroactive from Volume 1, Issue 1 (2008) of the journal.
