USF study: HHV-6 causes permanent infection by inserting its DNA into human chromosomes

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infects nearly 100 percent of humans in early childhood, and the infection then lasts for the rest of a person's life. Now, a team led by Peter Medveczky, MD, a professor in the Department of Molecular Medicine at the University of South Florida, has discovered that in some individuals, HHV-6 causes such a permanent infection by inserting or "integrating" its DNA into human chromosomes.

Presentation of results from open-label extension study of Xenazine

Lundbeck Inc. today announced the presentation of results from an open-label extension study of Xenazine- (tetrabenazine) for the treatment of chorea associated with Huntington's disease (HD). Data from this study demonstrated that after an 80-week treatment period, subjects treated with Xenazine experienced a statistically significant reduction in chorea score (p< 0.0001) as measured using the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) compared with baseline.

Lancet World Report examines the challenges ahead for the GAVI Alliance, which after a decade of "steadily increasing financing" is now "facing a funding shortfall for the next decade that could hamper the roll-out of new vaccines." Archives Of Internal Medicine: Hospital Cost Of Care, Quality Of Care, And Readmission Rates - This study compares patients treated for pneumonia and congestive heart failure (CHF) and finds that high-cost hospitals don't always deliver better care. The researchers, who based their analysis on the data from 3,146 hospitals in the 2004 to 2006 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR), report that "risk-adjusted costs of care for CHF and pneumonia varied widely between hospitals, although hospital cost-of-care patterns seemed stable over time and correlated across conditions."

The HealthGrades America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2010 were identified in a report issued today by the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. The analysis, which examined objective patient outcomes over three years at all 5,000 of the nation’s nonfederal hospitals, found that the 50 Best Hospitals had mortality rates that were, on average, 27% lower than other hospitals.
