Robotic surgery does not compromise clinical outcomes for prostate cancer surgery

Robotic surgical technology with its three-dimensional, high-definition view gives surgeons the sensation of touch, even as they operate from a remote console. A new study describes the phenomenon, called intersensory integration, and reports that surgical outcomes for prostate cancer surgery using minimally invasive robotic technology compare favorably with traditional invasive surgery.

Study shows cryoablation technique offers a potential treatment for breast cancer

Freezing a cancer kills it in its place, and also appears to generate an immune response that helps stop the cancer's spread, leading to improved survival rates over surgery, according to a new study in mice from researchers at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Scientists show omega-3 fatty acid and its derivatives kill neuroblastoma cancer cells

The next treatment for cancer might come from fish says a new research report published in the March 2010 print edition of the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org). In the report, scientists show that the omega-3 fatty acid, "docosahexaenoic acid" or "DHA," and its derivatives in the body kill neuroblastoma cancer cells.

Standardized guidelines for treatment of CRPC are lacking and healthcare professionals must consider several factors, including serum markers, patient age and pre-existing comorbidities when choosing between second-line hormonal therapy and chemotherapy for treatment of CRPC.

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals receives CHMP advice on OGX-011 development plan in treatment of mCRPC

OncoGenex Pharmaceuticals announced today that it has received written, scientific advice from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on the company's development plan for OGX-011 (also known as custirsen) for the treatment of men with metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). The input received from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) at the EMA was in overall agreement with OncoGenex's development plan regarding the proposed preclinical studies and both the study designs and analyses for the Phase III trials.

Focal therapy for localized prostate cancer: US HIFU announces intention to fund multi-center trial

US HIFU, a world leader in minimally invasive high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technologies and manufacturer of the Sonablate® 500 medical device, has announced its intention to fund a landmark multi-center trial to study focal therapy for localized prostate cancer. Mark Emberton, M.D., (FRCS-Urology), consultant urological surgeon and divisional clinical director of cancer services at University College London Hospital (UCLH), along with Hashim Uddin Ahmed, MRC clinical research fellow, will lead the trial.

The patent claims cover the use of Apoptone to treat prostate cancer, breast cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy. Apoptone (HE3235) is a novel synthetic steroid analog of a dihydrotestosterone metabolite and has been found to stimulate cell death (apoptosis) in animal models of prostate and breast cancers.

The National Basketball Association's (NBA) Denver Nuggets Coach George Karl announced today that he has been diagnosed with treatable neck and throat cancer. According to published media reports, Karl's physician says the coach has cancer of his right tonsil that has spread to a lymph node in his neck. The 58-year-old Karl, who is also a prostate cancer survivor, coached in the NBA's All-Star game this past weekend.
