Light Sciences Oncology announces Phase 2 trial of Aptocine in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Light Sciences Oncology, Inc. (LSO) today announced the treatment of the first patients in a Phase 2 clinical trial of its innovative targeted drug treatment Aptocine(TM) (talaporfin sodium) in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). The Phase 2 trial expands the Aptocine BPH development program on the basis of a Phase 1 study at escalating light doses. In the open-label Phase 2 trial, Aptocine is being tested for safety and efficacy in 40 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to BPH. Aptocine is also in two Phase 3 clinical trials for solid tumors in the liver as well as preclinical development for prostate cancer.

Patients who experience fatigue during radiotherapy for breast or prostate cancer may be reacting to activation of the proinflammatory cytokine network, a known inflammatory pathway, according to a report in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Persistently present levels of unmetabolized folic acid found in the population indicate that introducing mandatory food fortification may result in an ‘overdosing’ effect. A study of blood donors, new mothers and babies, published in the open access journal BMC Public Health, has found that most already get enough folic acid from voluntarily fortified foods.

Dendreon signs lease for new manufacturing facility in Union City, Ga

Dendreon Corporation (Nasdaq: DNDN) today announced it has signed a lease agreement with Majestic Realty Co. to build a 160,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Union City, Ga., where it expects to manufacture PROVENGE(R) (sipuleucel-T) for patients with advanced prostate cancer. Gtx, Inc. reports Q2 2009 results

GTx, Inc. (Nasdaq: GTXI) today reported financial results for the second quarter of 2009. The net loss for the second quarter and six months ended June 30, 2009 was $11.3 million and $22.6 million, respectively, compared with a net loss of $13.2 million and $26.0 million for the same periods in 2008. NIH stimulus funding supports Emory - grants to advance research, create jobs, support students

At least 50 research projects so far, supported by more than $10 million in stimulus grants from the National Institutes of Health, are expected to lead to new discoveries at Emory University that will improve medical treatment, create new jobs, and provide additional educational opportunities for students. Bellicum Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced dosing of the first patient in a Phase I/II clinical trial of BP-GMAX-CD1, a novel pharmacologically regulated dendritic cell vaccine for the treatment of prostate cancer. The disease-specific trial is being conducted under a Bellicum Investigational New Drug application allowed by the FDA in 2008.
