Long-term data presented today from the SPIRIT III pivotal U.S. clinical trial demonstrated that the observed clinical advantages of Abbott's market-leading XIENCE V(R) Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System continued to increase as compared to the TAXUS(R) Express2 Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent System (TAXUS).

Researchers find new technique for long-term treatment of DVT

Deep Venous Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that involves the formation of a blood clot inside of a deep vein usually in the legs. A patient with DVT is typically treated with anticoagulants (blood thinners) however researchers have found that image-guided interventional radiology procedures may play a more central role in the long-term treatment of DVT, according to a study published in the October issue of the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR).

African Americans at higher risk of developing potentially deadly DVT and PE than other ethnic populations

Speaking at the Venous Disease Coalition (VDC) Annual Meeting today, Dr. Garth Graham from the Office of Minority Health at the Department of Health and Human Services followed up on last year's Surgeon General's Call to Action by focusing attention on the African American population which is at significantly increased risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).

Interim data from GORE PROPATEN Vascular Graft studies presented at the 2009 vascular meeting

W. L. Gore & Associates (Gore) today announced that several physicians recently presented interim data from ongoing GORE PROPATEN® Vascular Graft studies to clinical audiences at the 2009 annual vascular meeting. The conference, the premier event hosted by the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), was held in mid-June in Denver, Colorado. One physician reported primary patency rates as high as 100 percent for below-knee bypasses.

Chinese SFDA approves Abbott's XIENCE V drug eluting stent for treating coronary artery disease

Abbott (NYSE: ABT) announced today that the Chinese State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) has approved its XIENCE V(R) Everolimus Eluting Coronary Stent System for the treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD) - the leading cause of death in China. XIENCE V is the only drug eluting stent to have demonstrated superiority over the TAXUS(R) Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent System (TAXUS) in the primary endpoints of two randomized, pivotal (phase III) clinical trials.

Study reveals feasibility of OrbusNeich's Genous stent in patients needing undeferrable non-cardiac surgery

Merck & Co., Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee agreed that efficacy, immunogenicity and safety data from clinical trials in males support the use of GARDASIL® [Human Papillomavirus Quadrivalent (Types 6, 11, 16 and 18) Vaccine, Recombinant] in boys and men 9 through 26 years of age for the prevention of genital warts caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11.

Peplin announces merger agreement with LEO Pharma

Peplin, Inc. (ASX:PLI) today announced a definitive merger agreement whereby LEO Pharma A/S (LEO), a privately-held, leading global pharmaceutical company within Dermatology and Critical Care, will acquire all outstanding securities of Peplin for approximately US$287.5 million (currently A$348.4 million) in cash. This represents a purchase price of US$16.99 per common share of Peplin stock or A$1.03 per Peplin CHESS Depositary Interest (CDI).

The Kyoto Heart study shows positive effect of valsartan on cardiovascular outcome

The KYOTO HEART Study, which took place in Japan between January 2004 and January 2009, shows that the addition of valsartan to conventional antihypertensive treatment to improve blood pressure control is associated with an improved cardiovascular outcome in Japanese hypertensive patients at high risk of CVD events.

PLATO study reveals that ticagrelor reduces the rate of cardiovascular events

The presentation of the PLATO (A Study of Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes), showed that ticagrelor (Brilinta) reduced the rate of cardiovascular (CV) events (CV death, myocardial infarction or stroke) from 11.7% to 9.8% compared clopidogrel (Plavix®) XX% (p<0.001, RRR = 16%), without an increase in major bleeding.

Cordis enrolls first patient in the CYPRESS clinical study

Cordis Corporation, a worldwide leader in the development and manufacture of interventional vascular technology, announced today that the first patient has been enrolled in the CYPRESS study, which will assess clinical outcomes in a broad range of patients with coronary artery disease who take dual anti-platelet therapy after receiving a CYPHER Sirolimus-eluting Coronary Stent.
