Watson confirms patent challenge by Alcon for generic Vigamox

Watson Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today confirmed that its subsidiary, Watson Laboratories, Inc., filed an Abbreviated New Drug Application (ANDA) with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeking approval to market Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.5%. Watson's Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride Ophthalmic Solution USP, 0.5% is a generic version of Alcon, Inc.'s Vigamox®, an antibiotic solution that is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

MD+DI honors Xeridiem with 2011 Medical Design Excellence Award

Xeridiem™ Medical Devices is a recipient of MD+DI 's 2011 Medical Design Excellence Award (MDEA). This international award was for a novel chest tube, the PleuraFlow Active Tube Clearance System (PleuraFlow ATC), developed by Clear Catheter Systems and the Carbon Design Group. Xeridiem orchestrated the design and development for manufacturability, supported the regulatory submission, as well as manages the supply chain including order fulfillment.

In a large multi-center clinical trial, a new PSA test to screen for prostate cancer more accurately identified men with prostate cancer -- particularly the aggressive form of the disease -- and substantially reduced false positives compared to the two currently available commercial PSA tests, according to newly published research from Northwestern Medicine.

Men who consume digoxin have 24% reduced risk of prostate cancer

Johns Hopkins scientists and their colleagues paired laboratory and epidemiologic data to find that men using the cardiac drug, digoxin, had a 24 percent lower risk for prostate cancer. The scientists say further research about the discovery may lead to use of the drug, or new ones that work the same way, to treat the cancer.

Ethicon, Inc., announced today that the CDC has reviewed clinical data from patients treated with BIOPATCH Protective Disk with CHG as part of its update to the 2002 guidelines for reducing risk of intravascular catheter-associated infections in the United States. In the new guidelines, use of a CHG sponge dressing is designated as a Category 1B recommendation.
