HRA Pharma announces FDA Advisory Committee approval for ulipristal acetate as emergency contraceptive

HRA Pharma announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Advisory Committee for Reproductive Health Drugs voted 11 to 0 that the company's application provided sufficient information to conclude that ulipristal acetate is effective and safe for use as an emergency contraceptive.

Predictive Biosciences completes $25M Series C financing round

Predictive Biosciences, a commercial stage, fully-integrated developer of novel molecular diagnostic cancer assays and a provider of anatomic pathology laboratory products and services, today announced the completion of a $25 million Series C round of growth capital financing. New investor ProQuest Investments led the round, joined by all current investors: Flybridge Capital Partners, Highland Capital Partners, Kaiser Permanente Ventures and New Enterprise Associates.

New data shows Ohio children with special health care needs have inadequate insurance coverage

A third of Ohio children with special health care needs have unstable or inadequate insurance coverage despite the fact that they may qualify for government health programs, according to a new data analysis by the Child Policy Research Center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Blood flow interruption during renal surgery can increase risk of chronic kidney disease

Interrupting the blood flow for more than 20 to 25 minutes during kidney cancer (http://www.mayoclinic.org/kidney-cancer/research.html) surgery leads to a greater risk for patients developing chronic kidney disease, a Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic collaborative research team has found. The study was published today in the journal, European Urology.

FDA approves City of Hope's neural stem cell-based therapy study for recurrent high-grade gliomas

City of Hope researchers received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct the first-in-human study of a neural stem cell-based therapy targeting recurrent high-grade gliomas, the most aggressive type of brain tumor. Karen S. Aboody, M.D., associate professor in City of Hope's Department of Neurosciences, leads the research team that developed this treatment strategy. Jana Portnow, M.D., assistant professor and assistant director of the Brain Tumor Program at City of Hope, is the principal investigator for the clinical trial.

BioSante's GVAX CML Vaccine granted FDA Orphan Drug designation

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the receipt of Orphan Drug designation for GVAX CML Vaccine in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) from the FDA's Office of Orphan Products Development.
