Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's initiative to transform health in developing countries

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation today announced 76 grants of US$100,000 each to pursue bold ideas for transforming health in developing countries. The grants support researchers across 16 countries, including nine in Europe and Africa with ideas as diverse as using the power of sunlight to kill malaria-causing mosquito larvae and developing a device that repels mosquitoes without insecticides.

The medical homes model is spreading

A new model of health care called "medical homes" offers a stark contrast to hurried doctor visits, long waits and rushed physicians, the Chicago Tribune reports. Instead, a patients gets regular phone calls and e-mails from medical staff, reminders for flu screenings and vaccines, and less hurried doctors.

AFFiRiS reports encouraging results from clinical studies of its two Alzheimer's vaccines

AFFiRiS AG today announced that the primary endpoints have been met for the Phase I clinical studies of its two Alzheimer's vaccines AD01 and AD02, which demonstrated favourable safety and tolerability profiles. These results trigger a 10 million EUR milestone payment from licensee GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals.

Members of Humana to receive coverage for the administration cost of H1N1 vaccine

Humana Inc. today announced that the company will cover the administration cost of the H1N1 (swine flu) vaccine for all fully insured members including those members who have a benefit plan that excludes immunization coverage. All co-payment, coinsurance and deductibles will be waived for the administration of the H1N1 vaccination regardless of the preventative-services benefit currently provided in these members’ plans.

Positive data from BioSante Pharmaceuticals' LibiGel Phase III clinical development program

BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc., today announced positive safety data in its ongoing LibiGel Phase III clinical development program. For the first time, unblinded data have been reviewed by the independent DMC of the LibiGel Cardiovascular and Breast Cancer Safety Study. Based on this review of unblinded data, the DMC unanimously recommended continuation of the study as described in the study protocol, with no modifications.

SIMPONI treatment results in greater inhibition of structural damage in arthritis patients
