Open Monoclonal Technology, Inc. (OMT) today announced its new human antibody platform using the first genetically engineered rats expressing a human antibody repertoire. The company, which also created the first targeted knockout rats in 2009, is now cross-breeding the knockout animals with the rats expressing human antibodies to finalize its platform.

Clinical data of pomalidomide for treating patients with multiple myeloma presented at ASH 2010

Celgene International Sàrl today announced that its next IMiD compound, pomalidomide, was evaluated in three separate investigational trials of patients with multiple myeloma who were relapsed or refractory after prior treatments including lenalidomide, thalidomide and bortezomib. The clinical data were presented at the 52nd Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology in Orlando, Florida.

DPT Laboratories, Ltd., a pharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organization, announced today that it received FDA approval to manufacture commercial supplies of a leading sterile ointment for wound care at its Center of Excellence for Sterile & Specialty Products in Lakewood, N.J. Euthymics Bioscience, Inc. today will present Phase II clinical data demonstrating that its lead product candidate EB-1010, a next-generation antidepressant, is effective for treating major depressive disorder (MDD) based on multiple standard measures of outcome for depression. EB-1010 also improved measures of anhedonia, a hallmark symptom of MDD, which is characterized by the inability to experience pleasure.

"India and the European Union (EU) have agreed that the comprehensive bilateral trade agreement being negotiated by the two will not result in an intellectual property regime that restricts the ability of Indian pharmaceutical firms to export generic or off-patent drugs by being far more stringent than the TRIPS [Trade-Related Aspects of International Property Rights] regime of the World Trade Organization," LiveMint.com reports in an article that describes recent debates over the agreement.

Alkermes announces preliminary results from ALKS 33 Phase 2 study in alcohol dependence

Alkermes, Inc. today announced preliminary results from a phase 2 clinical study of ALKS 33, one of Alkermes' proprietary candidates for the treatment of reward disorders and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. The 12-week study was designed to assess the safety and efficacy of daily oral administration of three different dose levels of ALKS 33 compared to placebo in 400 alcohol dependent patients.

Los Angeles Times: Three pharmaceutical firms — Roxane, Abbott Laboratories and B. Braun Medical — "agreed to pay more than $421 million to settle claims of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid — the latest in a string of large healthcare fraud settlements announced by the Justice Department. The drug companies charged one set of prices to doctors and pharmacies but reported another set of inflated figures that were used as benchmarks by government insurers reimbursing healthcare providers, authorities said" (Zajac, 12/8).
