Convergent Procedure for AF highlighted at EACTS 2010

The Convergent Procedure, a novel approach to treat atrial fibrillation (AF), enabled by epicardial ablation products from nContact Surgical, Inc., was highlighted at the Techno-College Atrial Fibrillation Session of the EACTS (European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery) Annual Meeting in Geneva, Switzerland. Gladstone Institute elects for 2010 recipient of Avant-Garde Award for HIV/AIDS Research

The National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health, announced today that Dr. Eric M. Verdin of the J. David Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, Calif., has been selected as the 2010 recipient of the NIDA Avant-Garde Award for HIV/AIDS Research for his proposal to study the mechanisms of latent HIV infection.

New York Hospital Queens invites the news media to tour its newly opened West Wing. The opening of the new building marks a major milestone for the hospital, for physicians and patients in Queens. The new seven-floor building, known as the "West Wing," has 190,000 square feet, and adds 80 certified patient beds, bringing the hospital's total to 519.

Metabolon, Inc., leaders in global metabolomics, biomarker discovery and biochemical analysis, announced today the grant of US Patent 7,781,160 entitled "Biomarkers Related to Metabolic Age and Methods Using the Same". Tengion, Inc., a leader in regenerative medicine, announced today the publication of a key study in the American Journal of Physiology Renal Physiology by researchers at Tengion. In the study, rodents with chronic kidney disease (CKD) were treated with healthy kidney cells to catalyze the regeneration of functional kidney tissue and delay disease progression, as evidenced by extended survival, improved kidney filtration, and reduced severity of kidney tissue pathology.

DCH Auto Group is pleased to announce the launch of its latest teen safe driving public service advertising campaign, "InTEXTicated," that will spotlight the dangers of texting and driving. Students from DCH-sponsored Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) chapters had the opportunity to vote on the design for this campaign – all submitted by students from DCH-sponsored high school SADD Chapters. The winning entry, by Samantha Carey of Old Bridge High School in Old Bridge, N.J., was selected as the best design for the new campaign.

A protein crucial for the immune response appears to be a key player in the progression of a devastating form of childhood leukemia called T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL). Suppressing the activity of the protein kills the leukemic cells, the study shows, opening a potential avenue to new drugs that could prevent progression of the disease.

BC-CfE study finds links between insite use, addiction treatment and stopping injection drug use

A study led by researchers at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (BC-CfE) at St. Paul's Hospital and the University of British Columbia has found that supervised injection facilities such as Vancouver's Insite connect clients with addiction treatment, which in turn resulted in greater likelihood of stopping injection drug use for at least six months.
