New contract agreement reached between Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Packard Children’s hospital and the SEIU-UHW union

Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and Stanford Hospital & Clinics announce that the hospitals have reached a new contract agreement with employees represented by the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) union. The SEIU-UHW membership, which represents 1,450 out of 9,172 employees at the hospitals in jobs such as housekeeping, food service, nursing assistants, and technicians, ratified the contract in a vote Thursday, August 27.

Genzyme’s supplemental NDA for treating adult AML with Clolar to be discussed by the FDA

Genzyme Corporation (Nasdaq: GENZ) announced today that its supplemental New Drug Application for Clolar® (clofarabine) will be discussed Tuesday, September 1 at a public meeting of the FDA’s Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee in Silver Spring, Maryland. The panel is expected to consider the clinical trial results Genzyme submitted to support the approval and labeling of Clolar to treat older adult patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the most common type of acute leukemia in adults.

Astrocytes play a key role in the generation of fMRI signals

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a technique widely used in studying the human brain. However, it has long been unclear exactly how fMRI signals are generated at brain cell level. This information is crucially important to interpreting these imaging signals. Scientists from the Academy of Finland's Neuroscience Research Programme (NEURO) have discovered that astrocytes, support cells in brain tissue, play a key role in the generation of fMRI signals.
