New radiotherapy treatment devised for treating women with metastatic ovarian cancer

In the future, women with metastatic ovarian cancer could be treated with a radioactive substance that can seek and destroy tumour cells. An initial study in patients conducted jointly by the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University Hospital has found that the treatment has no unwanted side-effects.

LifeCycle Pharma terminates contract agreement with CEO

LifeCycle Pharma A/S (OMX: LCP) announced today that the Board of Directors of LCP and Jim New have agreed to terminate the contract with Jim New. Hence, Jim New will with immediate effect step down as the President and CEO of LCP. The termination is related to different views on how an international company based in Scandinavia shall be managed.

Sectra signs six-year partnership agreement with Curato

Sectra, the market leader in Scandinavia for managing radiology images and patient information systems (RIS/PACS), and Norwegian company Curato, the Nordic region’s largest supplier of radiology examinations, have signed a six-year partnership agreement for Sectra’s products and services. The order value amounts to approximately SEK 100 million.

Boston Scientific appoints Senior Vice President for its Cardiac Rhythm Management group

Study reveals that downregulation of IRF-8 gene causes gum diseases, arthritis and osteoporosis

Investigators at Hospital for Special Surgery, collaborating with researchers from other institutions, have contributed to the discovery that a gene called interferon regulator factor-8 (IRF-8) is involved in the development of diseases such as periodontitis (gum disease), rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. The study, which will be published online August 30, ahead of print, in the journal Nature Medicine, could lead to new treatments in the future.

FDA approves the usage of Valcyte for preventing CMV disease in pediatric patients

Roche announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Valcyte(R) (valganciclovir hydrochloride) for the prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in pediatric kidney and heart transplant patients (4 months to 16 years of age) at high risk of developing CMV disease.

RE-LY trial establishes effectiveness of PRADAX in reducing stroke risk in AF patients

Results of the landmark RE-LY(R) Trial (Randomized Evaluation of Long term anticoagulant therapy) demonstrate that atrial fibrillation (AF) patients taking PRADAX(R) (dabigatran etexilate) 150mg twice daily (BID) significantly reduced their risk of stroke and systemic embolism by 34 per cent (p less than 0.001) as compared to patients well-controlled on warfarin, without increasing the risk of major bleeding.

Oral dabigatran etexilate reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism

Boehringer Ingelheim today announced data from the landmark RE-LY® study - the largest atrial fibrillation (AF) outcomes trial ever conducted (18,113 patients in 44 countries worldwide) - presented for the first time at the European Society of Cardiology Congress and published online in the New England Journal of Medicine. Results show that dabigatran etexilate 150mg BID significantly reduces the risk of stroke and systemic embolism by 34% (p<0.001) in patients with atrial fibrillation compared to well-controlled warfarin without increasing the risk of major bleeding.

Sanofi-aventis (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) announced today that the investigational anti-Xa intravenous anticoagulant otamixaban reduced by 27 to 42 percent the odds of the composite primary endpoint of death, myocardial infarction, urgent revascularization or rescue GPIIb/IIIa use in 4 out of the 5 otamixaban tested doses, versus standard UFH/eptifibatide combination in [non-ST] ACS patients suitable for invasive strategy.

Clinical data of the REVERSE trial reveals how CRT improves functioning of the heart

Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a proven therapy indicated for patients with moderate to severe heart failure. Additional 24-month clinical data presented today on the European cohort of 262 patients in the REVERSE (Resynchronization Reverse Remodeling in Systolic Left Ventricular Dysfunction) trial, sponsored by Medtronic, Inc., provides a deeper understanding of how CRT improves the function of the heart, including reduction in heart size and improvements in pumping efficiency, in certain heart failure patients with mild symptoms.
