A Sydney man accused of deliberately infecting two female tourists with HIV was refused bail. The magistrate at Penrith Local Court yesterday refused the bail application as she considered the risk to society was too great and the married man could possibly infect even one more woman.
The magistrate, Fiona Toose, told Stanislas Kanengele-Yondjo "To ensure that you do not re-offend, and my concern is that there is a likelihood of that with dire consequences for the victim, I intend to bail refuse you for the protection of the community,"
Kanengele-Yondjo, a 41-year-old unemployed information technology worker from Blacktown, Sydney, appeared via a video link from Silverwater Jail yesterday. He was charged with two counts of maliciously causing a person to contract a grievous bodily disease.
Kanengele-Yondjo, who the court was told was HIV-positive, had applied for bail after completing a six-month sentence on Tuesday for an unrelated fraud matter. It was while serving the sentence that police tracked him down in prison.
One of the victims, an Irish woman, came forward, saying she discovered on her return to Ireland that she had contracted HIV after having unprotected sex with him.
The matter was adjourned for hearing on June 11 at Penrith Local Court .
