BMA(NI) response to launch of latest DHSSPS consultation document

Commenting on today's launch of the DHSSPS consultation document, "A Healthier Future", the Chairman of the BMA's NI Council, Dr Brian Patterson, said:

"We will of course be responding fully to this latest document, as we have done with previous others. However, we are concerned that there has been so much consultation over the last period of years with little positive outcomes. We can't afford to waste any more time in Northern Ireland. While we encourage debate and review the time is now right for radical action."

Dr Peter Maguire, Deputy Chairman of the BMA's Board of Science, welcomed the Health Minister's recognition today that passive smoking kills.

"That being the case, we would urge the Minister not to delay any further in calling for an immediate ban on smoking in enclosed public places. Every fortnight of delay means another person dies in Northern Ireland."

"The Minister has said the evidence is incontrovertible that second-hand tobacco smoke kills. Why then are we waiting?"
