In an initial response to the further consultation document on the Review of Public Administration, BMA(NI) Chairman, Dr Brian Patterson, said: "In our response to the first RPA document we highlighted our belief that the number of Health Boards in Northern Ireland should be reduced and are pleased to see that this has been reflected in this latest document. However, we will be seeking to ensure that a reduction in Boards, and other health related bodies, will not result in a reduction of frontline staff or public health medicine.
"The BMA has for many years campaigned for a reduction in bureaucracy within the NHS and is keen to see this happen. It is imperative though that frontline services are protected and receive substantial investment from the financial savings gained in other areas.
"We are very concerned though about the amount of time it is taking in bring about these reforms. We do not believe they should be hindered by the suspension of the Northern Ireland Assembly and will be urging Government here to drive this Review through. The health service in Northern Ireland is creaking at the seams and unless urgent and radical steps are taken to improve the situation, patients will continue to suffer as waiting lists grow."
